Healthy gums do not bleed. If they bleed when you brush or floss, it is almost always a sign of inflammation – usually triggered by bacterial plaque at the gum line.

In short

The most common cause of bleeding gums is gum inflammation (gingivitis) caused by plaque. With thorough care it usually subsides within one to two weeks. If the gums bleed for longer, or bad breath or receding gums develop as well, periodontitis should be ruled out.

## What you should do now

What to do
1. **Keep brushing**thoroughly but gently, especially now. Do not skip areas for fear of bleeding.
2. **Clean between your teeth**daily with [interdental brushes or floss](https://zahnarztpraxis-st-peter.de/en/guide/cleaning-between-teeth/).
3. **Watch for two weeks**If it improves, it was usually gingivitis.
4. **Dentist**If it persists, come in for an examination and professional cleaning.
