The first visit to the dentist shapes how children think about dentists later on. The aim is for it to be a relaxed, perhaps even exciting experience – without treatment, without pressure.

In short

Children should have their first dental check-up (early detection examination) as soon as the first baby tooth appears, i.e. from around 6 months of age. Prepare your child positively, avoid threats and words like “hurt”, and plan the appointment for a time when your child is well rested.

## How to prepare your child

- look at picture books about the dentist
- “play dentist” at home – counting teeth with a spoon
- take your child along to one of your own check-ups
- speak positively and do not pass on your own fears

At the first visit, getting to know each other is the main focus.
