People with diabetes have a significantly higher risk of periodontitis. Conversely, untreated periodontitis can make blood sugar harder to control. This interaction is well documented – and it is an opportunity: treating the gums also does something for the metabolism.

In short

High blood sugar weakens the immune defence and wound healing in the gums, so periodontitis occurs more often and is more severe. The inflammation in the tissues supporting the teeth can in turn impair the effect of insulin. Periodontitis treatment can have a positive effect on long-term blood sugar (HbA1c).

## What people with diabetes can do

- have a check-up at least once a year, including gum measurement
- tell your dentist about your diabetes and your HbA1c value
- regular [professional teeth cleaning](https://zahnarztpraxis-st-peter.de/en/teeth-cleaning-nuremberg/)
- do not ignore bleeding gums
- make sure your GP and your dentist know about each other

Gum health and blood sugar are linked.

## Frequently asked questions

Can I have an implant if I have diabetes?

With well-controlled diabetes this is usually possible. The risk of inflammation is higher, so aftercare is particularly important.

How often should I have professional cleaning if I have diabetes?

Often two or more appointments a year make sense – depending on the findings.
