Toothache likes to strike at the worst possible time: on a Friday evening, at the weekend or on a public holiday. In Bavaria there is an emergency dental service for exactly these situations. So that you do not have to search for long when it matters, we have summarised the most important points.

In short

At weekends, on public holidays and on bridge days you can find the dental practice on duty in Nuremberg via the portal of the Bavarian association of statutory health insurance dentists (KZVB): www.notdienst-zahn.de. Call ahead. Until then, cooling, keeping your head raised and over-the-counter painkillers help. If you have swelling with fever or difficulty breathing or swallowing, call 112.

## How to find the emergency service

Emergency service
1. **Open the emergency service portal**[www.notdienst-zahn.de](https://www.notdienst-zahn.de/?ref=zahnarztpraxis-st-peter.de) (KZVB) and enter “Nürnberg” or your postcode.
2. **Call the practice**The practice on duty will tell you when you can come.
3. **Bring with you**your health insurance card (eGK), a list of your medications and, if you have one, your allergy card.
4. **Then come to us**The emergency practice provides acute treatment. We will be happy to take over any further treatment; call us on the next working day: [0911 554181](tel:+49911554181).

## What you can do until your appointment

- **Cool:** from the outside with a cold, damp cloth – not with ice directly on the skin.
- **Keep your head raised:** lying flat increases the pressure in the tooth.
- **Painkillers:** over-the-counter products according to the package leaflet. Acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin) can increase bleeding.
- **Do not:** put tablets on the gum, drink alcohol “to numb it”, or apply heat to swelling.

It is best to call the emergency service ahead.

## When it is really urgent

Swelling that spreads towards the eye or neck, fever, or difficulty swallowing or breathing is an emergency – call 112 or go to an emergency department with oral and maxillofacial surgery. After accidents with head injuries, too, medical care comes first.

## Frequently asked questions

Do I have to pay anything at the emergency service?

For patients with German statutory health insurance, emergency treatment is covered by the insurance. Bring your health insurance card with you.

Can I also go to a hospital emergency department?

For toothache alone, the emergency dental service is the right place to go. Dental care is not always available in hospital emergency departments – except for severe swelling or injuries.
