Wisdom teeth usually come through between the ages of 17 and 25 – if at all. Often there is not enough room in the jaw. Not every wisdom tooth has to come out, but many cause problems.

In short

Wisdom teeth are removed if they repeatedly cause inflammation, are decayed, damage neighbouring teeth, form cysts or are foreseeably going to cause problems. The procedure is usually done under local anaesthesia. Swelling and pain in the first few days are normal; after about one to two weeks the wound has largely healed.

## Reasons for removal

- recurring inflammation of the gum flap over the tooth
- decay in the wisdom tooth or the neighbouring tooth
- cysts, lack of space, misalignment
- before orthodontic or prosthetic treatment

Horizontally positioned wisdom teeth can damage the neighbouring tooth.

## After the surgery

Healing process
1. **Day 1**cool, rest, no smoking, no alcohol, soft food.
2. **Days 2–3**swelling often peaks; keep your head raised.
3. **From day 4**symptoms ease; careful oral hygiene.
4. **Days 7–10**stitches removed, check-up.

Good to know

Take pain seriously if it gets worse again after the third day – this can indicate a wound-healing problem. Please call us.

## Frequently asked questions

All four at once?

That is possible, but depends on their position, the effort involved and your wishes. Often one side is treated after the other.

When can I do sport again?

Usually after a few days, once the swelling has gone down.
