Professional Teeth Cleaning: Is It Worth It?

What happens during professional teeth cleaning, who benefits most, how often it makes sense and who pays for it.

Professional Teeth Cleaning: Is It Worth It?

“But I brush thoroughly – do I really need professional teeth cleaning?” We hear this question a lot. The honest answer: even the best care at home does not reach every spot. Professional cleaning complements your own oral hygiene where the toothbrush and floss reach their limits.

In short

Professional teeth cleaning removes tartar, bacterial plaque and discolouration even in hard-to-reach places, smooths the surfaces and strengthens the enamel with fluoride. It lowers the risk of tooth decay, gum inflammation and periodontitis – especially for people with implants, crowns, braces or diabetes.

How often?

For most adults, one to two appointments a year make sense. With a higher risk – after periodontitis, with implants, with diabetes or as a smoker – we often recommend shorter intervals.

Who pays?

Professional teeth cleaning is not a standard benefit of German statutory health insurance, but many insurers pay a subsidy or cover part of the cost. Ask your insurer – we will issue the invoice accordingly. Private insurance and supplementary dental insurance usually reimburse it.

Frequently asked questions

Does professional cleaning damage the enamel?

No, not when it is done properly. Polishing smooths the surface and fluoride strengthens the enamel.

Does professional cleaning make sense during pregnancy?

Yes, especially then – due to hormonal changes, the gums are more prone to inflammation during pregnancy.
