Root Canal Treatment: What the Costs Depend On

Why no two root canal treatments are alike, what the costs depend on and how you get clarity in advance.

Root Canal Treatment: What the Costs Depend On

“What will this cost me?” – a fair question that we answer before every root canal treatment. There is no flat answer: a front tooth with one straight canal is something quite different from a molar with four curved canals or a retreatment. What matters is the tooth, the findings and the treatment methods needed for lasting success.

In short

The cost of root canal treatment depends on the effort involved: the number and shape of the canals, the degree of inflammation, whether it is a retreatment or a first treatment, and the methods used, such as the operating microscope, rotary instrumentation and enhanced disinfection. You receive a written cost estimate before we start; many supplementary dental insurance policies reimburse a large share.

What does the effort depend on?

FactorWhy it affects the costs
Tooth and number of canalsFront teeth usually have one canal, large molars three to four – often curved or branched.
First treatment or retreatmentIn a retreatment the old root filling must first be removed completely.
InflammationWith severe inflammation, medicated dressings and additional appointments are needed.
Dental operating microscopemakes hidden canals, cracks and old filling materials visible
Enhanced disinfectionactivated irrigation reaches areas that instruments cannot reach
Restoration afterwardsRoot-treated molars often need a partial crown or crown.

How high are the costs?

Fees are calculated according to the German scale of fees for dentists (GOZ) and depend heavily on the effort involved. Reliable flat-rate prices therefore cannot be given. After the examination and X-ray you receive a written cost estimate from us – so you know in advance what to expect. Whether and to what extent your health insurance contributes is something we clarify with you individually.

Supplementary dental insurance

Many supplementary dental insurance policies (Zahnzusatzversicherung) reimburse tooth-preserving treatment, including the use of the operating microscope. Check your policy for waiting periods and reimbursement limits – we will gladly provide the documents you need.

Good to know

Think long term: a tooth that is kept is, as a rule, less expensive than extraction, an implant and a crown.

Frequently asked questions

Will I get a cost estimate in advance?

Yes. We always discuss the costs with you in writing before treatment.

Why does a retreatment cost more than a first treatment?

The old root filling must first be removed completely, and the canals are often difficult to access or blocked. This takes more time and often requires the operating microscope.
