Caring for Implants Properly: How to Make Them Last
With the right care and regular aftercare, implants often last for decades. These aids and tips help.
An implant is an investment in quality of life – and it needs looking after. In principle you care for it like your own tooth. However, the transition between the crown and the gum needs special attention.
Brush implants twice a day with a soft toothbrush and clean the spaces in between daily with suitable interdental brushes or implant floss. Regular check-ups and professional cleaning at the practice are also important.
The right aids
| Aid | What for? |
|---|---|
| Soft manual or electric toothbrush | outer and inner surfaces, gum line |
| Interdental brushes (plastic-coated) | spaces between teeth, without scratching the surface |
| Implant floss (Superfloss) | under bridges and around implant posts |
| Single-tuft brush | hard-to-reach areas, the last molars |
| Oral irrigator (in addition) | for bars and dentures on implants |

Common mistakes
- highly abrasive toothpaste (“whitening” toothpaste)
- interdental brushes with bare metal wire
- skipping check-ups because “nothing hurts”
- smoking
Have the size of your interdental brushes determined at the practice – brushes that are too small do not clean, and brushes that are too large injure the gums.
