Dentist Nuremberg St. Peter
Teeth Whitening
Whiter teeth – safely and under control: in-office whitening, home whitening with an individual tray or internal whitening for single dark teeth.
Teeth darken over the years – from coffee, tea, red wine, smoking or simply with age. Whitening at the dentist lightens the natural tooth colour – in a controlled way and with concentrations not permitted for over-the-counter products. Healthy teeth and gums are a prerequisite.
In whitening, an agent based on hydrogen peroxide penetrates the enamel and lightens embedded stains. At the practice this happens in one session (in-office), at home over several days with an individually made tray (home whitening). Fillings and crowns do not get lighter.
Which whitening methods are there?
| Method | Procedure | For whom? |
|---|---|---|
| In-office whitening | whitening at the practice, the gums are protected | those who want a quick result |
| Home whitening | individual tray + gel, over several days at home | gentle, easy to control |
| Internal whitening | whitening from inside for a dark root-treated tooth | single discoloured teeth |

Beforehand: cleaning and check-up
Before whitening we examine teeth and gums and clean the teeth professionally. Leaking fillings or decay are treated first. The teeth often already look much brighter after the cleaning.
Under EU cosmetics law, whitening with higher-concentration hydrogen peroxide may only be used by dentists or under their direct supervision – and not on people under 18.
Side effects and durability
Temporary tooth sensitivity is possible and usually subsides after a few days. Depending on diet and habits, the result usually lasts one to three years and can be refreshed. More in our guide Teeth whitening: effect, risks, durability.
