Sports Dentistry & Mouthguards
Custom-made mouthguard, first aid for dental accidents and healthy teeth for better performance – for recreational and competitive athletes.
Teeth and sport have more to do with each other than you might think: in football, handball, hockey, martial arts, basketball or skating, dental accidents are common. Isotonic drinks and gels attack tooth enamel, and in strength training many people unconsciously clench their teeth. Inflammation in the mouth can affect performance.
A custom-made sports mouthguard fits securely, hardly hinders breathing or speaking and protects teeth and jaw much better than an off-the-shelf one. After a dental accident: hold a knocked-out tooth by the crown, do not clean it, store it in a tooth rescue box or cold UHT milk and go to the dentist immediately.
Custom mouthguard
After a digital scan of your upper jaw we design the mouthguard on the computer and make it by 3D printing – conventional thermoforming over a plaster model is no longer needed. The result is a precisely fitting guard that stays in place without you having to bite down. Because the data is stored, a lost mouthguard can simply be reprinted; for children and teenagers whose teeth and jaws are still growing, we rescan and adapt it.

- Hold it correctlyonly by the crown, never by the root. Do not wipe or disinfect it.
- Keep it moistideally in a tooth rescue box; otherwise in cold UHT milk or cling film. Never dry, not in water.

A tooth rescue box belongs in every sports bag and every club first-aid kit. It is available at pharmacies.
Clenching and grinding during strength training
Anyone who clenches their teeth when lifting puts heavy strain on teeth and jaw joints. If there are symptoms, a thin splint can help – more about TMD and splint therapy.

Frequently asked questions
Is the mouthguard thermoformed or printed?
We print it. It is based on a digital scan instead of an impression with a tray; the mouthguard is designed on the computer and made on our 3D printer. The file is stored in case a replacement is needed.
How long does a sports mouthguard last?
For adults usually several seasons. For children and teenagers it has to be renewed more often because of growth and changing teeth.
Can a knocked-out tooth grow back in?
Yes, if it is stored correctly and reinserted quickly, the chances are good. It is crucial that the root cells do not dry out.
