Dentist Nuremberg St. Peter
Children’s Dentistry
From the first baby tooth to the teenage years: playful, patient and with plenty of prevention – so that going to the dentist becomes normal for children.
Healthy baby teeth matter: they keep space free for the permanent teeth, are needed for chewing and learning to speak – and decay in baby teeth can spread to the following teeth. Above all, the first dental visit shapes how a child will later feel about dentists. That is why we take extra time for children.
Children should see the dentist from the first baby tooth, at the latest from 6 months of age. German statutory insurance pays for early check-ups up to the 6th birthday, including fluoride varnish, and from age 6 for individual prevention, including sealing of the permanent molars.
Our services for children
| Age | Service (statutory insurance) |
|---|---|
| 6 to 33 months | three dental early-detection check-ups, advice for parents |
| 6 months to 6 years | fluoride varnish up to twice per calendar half-year, further early-detection check-ups |
| 6 to 17 years | individual prevention: oral hygiene check, advice, fluoride |
| 6 to 17 years | fissure sealing of the permanent molars |

How we make dental visits child-friendly
- Get-to-know appointment: riding the chair, looking in the mirror, counting teeth – no treatment.
- Explain rather than hide: we name instruments in a child-friendly way and show them beforehand.
- Parents present: small children can sit on a parent’s lap.
- Praise and breaks: every child has their own pace.
Tips for parents
- Brush twice a day from the first tooth – with fluoride children’s toothpaste in an age-appropriate amount.
- Brush your child’s teeth again after them until primary school age: children can only brush thoroughly themselves from around the age they learn joined-up writing.
- No constant sipping of sweet drinks, juice or milk from the bottle.
- Never use the dentist as a threat (“Otherwise you’ll have to go to the dentist!”).

Frequently asked questions
When should my child first see a dentist?
When the first baby tooth comes through, usually from 6 months. The early check-ups are recorded in the yellow child health booklet.
Do baby teeth need treatment if they fall out anyway?
Yes. Decayed baby teeth can cause pain and inflammation, damage the permanent teeth and lead to early tooth loss with space problems.
What helps with chalky teeth?
With MIH the teeth are particularly sensitive and prone to decay. Fluoride, sealing and gentle fillings help – the earlier we see the teeth, the better.
