Your Child’s First Visit to the Dentist

To the dentist from the first baby tooth: how to prepare your child so that the first visit is a good experience.

Your Child’s First Visit to the Dentist

The first visit to the dentist shapes how children think about dentists later on. The aim is for it to be a relaxed, perhaps even exciting experience – without treatment, without pressure.

In short

Children should have their first dental check-up (early detection examination) as soon as the first baby tooth appears, i.e. from around 6 months of age. Prepare your child positively, avoid threats and words like “hurt”, and plan the appointment for a time when your child is well rested.

How to prepare your child

  • look at picture books about the dentist
  • “play dentist” at home – counting teeth with a spoon
  • take your child along to one of your own check-ups
  • speak positively and do not pass on your own fears
