Pain After Root Canal Treatment: What Is Normal?

Some tenderness when biting is normal in the first few days. When symptoms are harmless, what helps and when you should get in touch.

Pain After Root Canal Treatment: What Is Normal?

The root canal treatment is done – and yet the tooth still makes itself felt. Many patients find this unsettling. In most cases it is a normal reaction of the tissue around the root tip. Here you can read what lies behind it and when you should get in touch.

In short

Mild to moderate discomfort, especially when biting, is normal in the first two to three days after root canal treatment and usually subsides within a week. Get in touch if the pain gets worse instead of better, swelling develops, you get a fever or the tooth feels “too high”.

Why does the tooth hurt after the treatment?

  • Irritation at the root tip: during cleaning, tissue and rinsing solution are pushed up to the root tip. The surrounding tissue reacts with mild inflammation.
  • Existing inflammation: if the bone around the root was already inflamed, it needs time to heal.
  • Injection site and rubber dam clamp: the gums can also be irritated for a few days.
  • Bite too high: if the temporary filling is slightly too high, the tooth is loaded with every bite – this can be corrected in seconds.

If the symptoms do not go away

If pain persists for weeks or returns after months, a missed canal, a crack in the root or a leaking restoration may be the cause. We then examine the tooth again – often under the operating microscope. In many cases a root canal retreatment or an apicoectomy can help.

Frequently asked questions

Can I do sport after root canal treatment?

Preferably not on the day of treatment. After that, if healing is normal, there is nothing against light exercise.

Do I need an antibiotic?

Usually not. An antibiotic only makes sense in certain situations, for example with spreading swelling and fever. We decide this case by case.
